The Kawatake Mokuami Memorial Monument on the grounds of Asakusa Shrine was erected by Taito City in 1968, 100 years after Edo became Tokyo, to honor Mokuami, who lived in this area.
Yoshiwara Shrine was created by enshrining together shrines that had existed in Yoshiwara since the Edo period. ”Sannin Kichisan Kuro Hatsu Kai.” This play also features a love story between Bunri (Bunzo Kiya), a sword dealer, and Ichie, a prostitute.
The story is based on “Yaoka Oshichi,” a girl who fell in love with Kichisaburo, a temple peasant, at a temple where she took refuge after a big fire, and was executed by arson when she tried to meet him again. She is famous for Ihara Saikaku's “Koshoku Gonin Onna” (Five Women of Color). A memorial tomb for Oshichi is located at Enjyo-ji Temple.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, where we will see a play this time, was opened in October 1990 as an arts and cultural facility by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to promote arts and culture such as music, drama, revue, and dance for the people of Tokyo and their international exchange. It has a concert hall dedicated to classical music, a playhouse for theater and dance performances, and Theater East and Theater West.
