Our excursion includes a short walk to the crater of the volcano. The Mount Vesuvius National Park is recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO and includes the caldera of Mount Somma and the Great Cone of Vesuvius, a sort of mountain within another mountain. The vegetation regrown above the lava is fascinating and has developed over the different eras. The surrounding agricultural areas are renowned for producing fruit, wine and flowers. Vesuvius is infamous for its eruptions, that of 79 AD.C., which was the deadliest in recent history and that of 1944, during World War II; today the volcano is considered active.
